I once found a breeder who feeds her Poms Puppy food throughout their life because of the calcium. Does anyone else do this? I think it sounds like a good idea

I have never heard of this method of feeding, but cant agree with it. If you give your dog a well balanced diet he will be getting the nutrients that he needs at the different stages of his life. The requirements needed as a puppy are very different the that of an old dog. I do not class myself as a "breeder" although I do breed from my little Pom. We have raised one litter and she has just had her second. I feed all my four dogs with a varied diet ie dog meat, fresh meat that I cook myself (minced beef, chicken, chicken livers, lamb liver., but you have to be careful with livers as too much causes diorhhea) I also sometimes treat them with cooked meats from the deli counter. After any meal I give them dry dog food as this helps clean their teeth. If you worried that you are not giving your dog enough vitamins, minerals etc then you can supplement their diet with something like "Stress", a powder that can be added to their food and cod liver oil capsules that helps maintain healthy bones. It is possible that some people will feed puppy food on a continuous basis as a cost and effort saving basis as Poms etc are small eaters and even a small tin of dog food is too much for one meal. Lets face it, you would not feed baby food to your 12 year old child would you? If you are still tempted my best advice is to consult a reputable vet.

I think that people will feed puppy food because it is small pedigree chum puppy food with rice is popular with dogs and as an all in one food kibbles should always be available to balance the diet and for those teeth!!! you have to be so careful with little toy breeds and make sure you feed them food that is small not something they can choke on, the if you have a fussy eater enervite is excellent its a paste for dogs that they can live on and boy do the love it its always best if possible to feed white meat chicken or turkey rather than red......
